8th graders from the King Middle School worked side by side with weekly volunteers to help prepare and serve a community lunch at Avesta Housing's 409 Cumberland Ave. This has been the fifth year the school has partnered with Wayside Food Programs as part of their annual Four Freedom's expedition. The students spend time engaging in a study of the Four Freedoms as presented by Franklin Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union speech. They study the concepts and meanings through a variety of reading assignments, guest lecturers, movies and out of the classroom research. As part of understanding Freedom from Want, students engage in community service throughout the Portland community. The student volunteers were engaged and hard working as they prepared, served and enjoyed lunch with the guests.
