Last weekend fishermen gathered together at the Port Harbor Marine in South Portland for the inaugural Spring Point Shootout Fishing Tournament. This tournament, previously billed as the Casco Bay Classic, is a striped bass, shark and ground fish tournament. Thanks to generous anglers we received 850 lbs of fresh catch to incorporate into our community meals menu and redistribute to our partner agencies across Cumberland County. All of this was made possible by Maine Hunters for the Hungry, who connected us with the tournament and sponsored the processing, which was done by our food rescue partners at Browne Trading Company.

Maine Hunters for the Hungry is a collaborative program between the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It provides a way for hunters to donate their hunt to help feed their community. The program connects the hunters to hunger relief agencies such as Wayside and pays for the processing costs. In addition they also work with Maine Wardens, biologists, Marine Patrol Officers and Maine State Troopers. This lean, high protein meat that would otherwise go to waste helps us improve nutritional standards while increasing food security in Cumberland County.
