Volunteering at Wayside isn’t just about fulfilling hours, it is also an opportunity to build relationships in the spirit of mutuality. The lines between those “being served” and those “serving” are actively blurred. Community members that help to pick up food donations also receive food through Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Individuals that attend Community Meals help with all aspects of the meal and some make financial contributions. Older youth attending meals for kids, help to lead and coordinate the younger children to get things set up. Beyond the opportunity to both give and receive, this approach invites community members into deeper relationships with others they might not otherwise ever connect with.
