Filling pantry shelves:

In 2010, Wayside Food Programs rescued & redistributed 1.8 million pounds of food to 555,000 people through partner agencies. This included the following distributions:

1,415,000 pounds of rescued food to 42 partner agencies;
an additional 365,000 pounds of food as The Maine Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Food Assistance Program & Commodity Supplemental Food Program distributing agency for Cumberland County; and
13,052 pounds of kids’ healthy snacks to five Portland Community Policing Centers.

How to donate food

There are a number of ways to donate food, including:

• Participating in our Food Rescue Program. If your business has surplus food, discover how Wayside can help rescue food that would otherwise go to waste. To learn more, email Don Morrison.

• Holding a food drive. Sponsor your own Food Drive or represent Wayside at a local food drive. Represent Wayside and hand out our wish list to shoppers at local stores. Collect and sort donated food. To learn more, email Carly Milkowski.

• Becoming part of our Community Gardens Program. Donate garden space or assist with planting, harvesting, weeding and maintenance projects at garden sites in Portland and South Portland. To learn more, email Carly Milkowski.
